Betty Margaret Schunk (nee Garlent)
December 18th, 1930-December 29th, 2024
Passed away peacefully at 94 years of age at Fox Ridge Care Community with her sons by her side. Betty was born in Brantford and loved to run competitively during her school days. After her marriage to Harold they lived in Halifax, Nova Scotia (where Harold was stationed in the Royal Canadian Navy). Betty worked at a store and was a foster mom to many children needing a safe home. They adopted 4 children at that time, because Betty said she fell in love with them and couldn’t let them go. They moved back to the Brantford area in 1974, and Betty worked at Home Hardware in Burford and later in Brantford at Parson’s. She loved to walk and would often walk from the North end of Brantford to West Brant to visit her grandchildren. Betty loved to learn about her family tree and traveled to Scotland to find relatives and document her lineage.
She knit countless baby outfits, hats, mittens and socks for her grandchildren and for her church family at St. James Anglican Church in Brantford. She spent her life giving more than she took. She loved her family deeply, she was funny and caring and always made time if you needed her. An incredible example for us all and will be deeply missed.
She is predeceased by her husband Harold Schunk, her friend and companion Harold Rowe, her daughter Susan Heinbuck, brother Rick Garlant and brother in law Eric Rainey. Loving sister to Cheryl Rainey from Bracebridge. Amazing mom to Glen and Jim (Yvonne) and Deb. Best Gramma to Kori (Josh), Bob (Joselyn), Natasia, Anthony, Jordon (Simon), Lauren (Chase), Erin, Andrew (Kori) and Katie (John). Great Gramma to Alex, Khloe, Brooklyn, Wilhem, Arthur, Sullivan, Bridgette and Abbigail.
Special thanks to the staff at the ForestGrove Wing at Fox Ridge Community in Brantford for their amazing care and compassion in caring for mom for this last year. As per Betty’s wishes cremation has taken place and a private service will be taking place. Arrangements have been entrusted with Hill and Robinson Funeral Home and Cremation Centre, 30 Nelson St., Brantford, 519-752-2543. If desired, donations to St. James Anglican Church would be appreciated.
